The Fourteenth Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl

The Fourteenth Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl(IEB) took place on February 21, 2008, in San Antonio, Texas, as a part of the 2008 Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) Annual Meeting. Thirty-two teams that won top scoring in ten regional ethics bowls over the past year competed for the championship. Squire Family Foundation Director Roberta Israeloff was in attendance.

IEB combines the excitement and fun of a competitive tournament with an innovative approach to education in practical and professional ethics. In the IEB, a moderator poses questions to teams of three to five students.

The team from Clemson University won, narrowly defeating the team from Wright State University (OH) in an exciting, all-day tournament. The teams discussed the ethical implications of reporting suspected illegal immigrants, and of parental rights in a difficult custody case. Weber State University (UT) and Westminster College (UT) made it to the quarter-finals, analyzing, among other topics, the ethics of prescription drug advertisements, and of living organ donation.

Recognized widely by educators, the IEB has received special commendation for excellence and innovation from the American Philosophical Association, and received the 2006 American Philosophical Association/Philosophy Documentation Center's 2006 prize for Excellence and Innovation in Philosophy Programs. The format, rules, and procedures of the IEB all have been developed to model widely acknowledged best methods of reasoning in practical and professional ethics.
